Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

As a part of the Nepal Country Office Strategic Note (SN) 2014-2017 Development Result Framework (DRF) Goal 2, UN Women continues strengthening women’s leadership roles and economic empowerment in Nepal. The DRF Goal 2 is designed to support the Government of Nepal (GoN) to advance women’s economic empowerment through a multi-pronged approach. This includes a capacity building of government officials to develop gender-responsive macroeconomic policies, provisions of vocational skills and entrepreneurship development training to excluded and vulnerable women and girls for their leadership roles in economic activities, and evidence and knowledge based policy advocacy to address structural barriers facing women for gender equality. Within the broader framework of the DRF Goal 2, UN Women currently implements five programmes/projects (“Advancing Women’s Economic Empowerment”, “Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment”, “Empowering Adolescent Girls and Young Women through the Provision of Comprehensive Sexuality Education and a Safe Learning Environment in Nepal”, “Advancing Resilience and Empowerment”, and “The Future We Want: Creating sustainable foundations for addressing human trafficking and unsafe migration of women and girls in Nepal”).

Reporting to Unit Manager (Economic Empowerment Unit), the Programme Specialist exercises overall responsibility for planning, implementing, and managing UN Women interventions under his/her portfolio.  She/he works in close collaboration with the programme and operations team, UN Women HQ staff, Government officials, multi and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UN Women programme implementation under portfolio.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
> Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, social sciences, human rights, gender/women's studies, international development, or a related field is required.

Experience:
> At least 5 years of progressively responsible work experience at the national or international level in design, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development projects;
> Technical experience in macroeconomic analysis, gender and human rights of women, specifically in the areas of women’s economic empowerment. Proven experience in producing analytical research work is preferred;
> Experience coordinating and liaising with government agencies and/or donors is an asset;
> Experience working in the UN System is an asset;
> Experience in leading/managing a team is an asset.

Language:
> Fluency in English and Nepali is required.
